Lime Plasters are crafted from lime putty blended with marble dust or other aggregates. It is color integral and applied in thin, multiple layers, creating a smooth, polished surface with delicate color variations and texture. Celebrated for its durability, breathability, and aesthetic elegance, lime plaster enhances both interior and exterior spaces while being eco-friendly and naturally resistant to mold and mildew. They can be custom tinted to color matches.
Marmorino has a larger aggregate causing the finish to be thicker with more undulation and a cloudy, more matte movement generally. This is also determined by the application and desired finish.
Grassello, also known as Venetian Plaster, has a smaller aggregate and smoother consistency, lending a more polished finish and the ability to be finished to a high gloss sheen.
Roman clay consists of natural clay, lime putty, and pigment. Natural clay is what gives Roman clay its distinctive texture and earthy color, lime putty helps with durability and longevity, and pigment allows you to customize the color of your paint to fit. Roman clay is known for its rich, textured appearance. It can be applied in various ways to create a range of finishes, from smooth and refined to heavily textured. It typically has a matte or low sheen finish. It is softer and less durable than lime plasters and more durable than lime wash. Roman clay can be tinted in a limited range of colors.
All plaster can be applied onto gypsum board and similar substrates and are generally approximately 3mm thick when finished, depending on how many layers are applied. This is a beautiful treatment for fireplaces and kitchen hoods as well as walls and ceilings. All decorative plasters are veneers and require a smooth surface.
Are Plasters Durable?
Lime plaster is durable but not as wipeable as some latex paints, requiring careful handling. Roman clay is softer and more easily marked. Both finishes can be damaged by nicks, scrapes, abrasives, and harsh cleaners. Whether a wall needs touchups or recoating depends on the extent and visibility of the damage. A sealer is recommended for wet and high traffic areas.

Limewash is a timeless decorative finish, dating back to the Roman Empire, composed of slaked lime and water, often enhanced with natural pigments. Limewash has natural antibacterial properties, making it a more sustainable choice. Limewash paint is not only eco-friendly and non-toxic but also enhances indoor air quality and is very breathable. This ancient technique imparts a soft, velvety patina to surfaces, allowing the underlying textures to subtly emerge. Renowned for its breathable, eco-friendly properties, lime wash offers a harmonious blend of beauty and functionality, creating serene, atmospheric spaces with a touch of rustic elegance. It can be custom color matched to your color and custom tinted.
When applied to brick and masonry it calcifies over time. An optional limewash primer will lock in the finish for yeaas to come. Leaving it to wear naturally with the elements will lend a more natural patina over time. It can be used indoors on walls, millwork, and other surfaces as well.
What is the Difference Between Lime Wash and Mineral Paint?
Both Lime Wash and Mineral Paint are known for their high mineral content, which contributes to their superior light refraction and luminosity. The main difference lies in their binders. Lime Wash uses a lime putty binder, resulting in a traditional matte finish with subtle, elegant variations. Over time, Lime Wash softens and develops a slight bloom as the lime surfaces.
In contrast, Mineral Paint uses liquid potassium silicate, or "liquid glass," as its binder. This strong and durable binder prevents fading, making Mineral Paint ideal for exterior use on mineral substrates such as stone, concrete, brick, or lime mortar. It provides a more uniform finish compared to the aged look of Lime Wash.
What are the Advantages of Using Lime Wash and Mineral Paint?
Lime Wash and Mineral Paint are among the healthiest paint finishes available. Made from all-natural materials, including mineral pigments, they offer a palette of 55 colors. These finishes bond to substrates naturally, creating durable, breathable coatings. They are hypoallergenic, non-flammable, and free of odors and VOCs (volatile organic compounds).
Are Lime Wash and Mineral Paint Durable?
Both Limeqash and Mineral Paint are durable but not as wipeable as some latex paints, requiring careful handling. Mineral Paint, with its "liquid glass" binder, is particularly durable on natural substrates like stone, concrete, brick, or lime mortar. It forms a permanent bond, avoiding the delamination issues common with synthetic paints. However, both finishes can be damaged by nicks, scrapes, abrasives, and harsh cleaners. Whether a wall needs touchups or recoating depends on the extent and visibility of the damage.
How Do I Care for a Limewash or Mineral Paint Finish?
To refresh dirty walls, applying a new coat of the same color is recommended. For areas exposed to splatters or constant water contact, such as backsplashes and bathroom areas, a waterproof sealer is advisable.
How Do I Order Samples?
For plaster color and texture determination, you can order a custom 12” x 12” finished board sample. One is included per project, with additional samples available for $125 each.
If you want to test the Lime Wash material, you can request a 1-liter sample to apply on your brick onsite, as brick textures, colors, and location elements vary. The cost depends on the color selection.
